ROSWELL, Ga. – He may only be 10 years old, but Cody Jackson has already received the attention of Congress and the president of the United States.

In a mid-morning ceremony in the office of Georgia's 6th District congressman, U.S. Rep. Tom Price, Jackson was presented Jan. 8 with the Presidential Gold-Level Volunteer Service Award and a personal congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama for his work to honor the military.

The award was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in communities nationwide. The award is issued at three levels: bronze, silver and the highest – gold.

Jackson began his work after asking his parents Ken and Kelly Jackson why it takes so long to go through security to get on an airplane. When they explained about Sept. 11 and how the military is fighting terrorism to protect Americans, he made a commitment to demonstrate to those in uniform that they are appreciated. Since beginning his mission, Jackson has met with over 12,000 arriving and departing troops at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. In addition, he has sent more than 1,800 pounds of goodies in so-called "care packages" to troops in combat zones.

In presenting the award on behalf of the president, Price said that in his eight years in the House of Representatives he has never had the opportunity to present the gold-level award before. Price said the fact that it is going to a 10-year-old boy demonstrates that the youngster has shown a special level of maturity and selflessness.

"Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise," wrote the president in a letter to Jackson.

Over the last several months, Jackson has been recognized by two area veterans' organizations, Alpharetta Post 201 of the American Legion and Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America in Cumming.
