Safety building on hold as city waits outcome of tax negotiations

January 15, 2013
MILTON, Ga. — The city of Milton's $5.8 million public safety building planned to be built on Bethany Bend is in a holding pattern as city leaders wait for sales tax negotiations with Fulton County to wrap-up.

City officials said they don't want to move forward with the new building until the local option sales tax negotiations are worked out.

But when the negotiations conclude, city leaders say the new public safety building will be another step toward forming Milton's identity as a city.

The designs for Milton's first municipal building are nearly complete, according to Public Works Director Carter Lucas.

The building will be on a 5-acre tract, and Precision Planning of Lawrenceville is in charge of drawing up those plans.

Lucas said he thinks groundbreaking will begin in the first half of this year.

The new building will house police, fire and court administrations.

These administrations currently work out of rented office space on Deerfield Parkway, but it's not the most accommodating.

"We are at the mercy of the landlord here," Lucas said. "And a lot of times landlords don't like those particular types of [administrations] in their lease space."

As a smaller city, transitioning the three administrations into the new building is expected to go smoothly.

The new public safety building will also add Milton's own fire station in the southeast corner of the city. Currently, Milton has a combined facility with Alpharetta for that area.

"This building will begin to establish us as a city," Lucas said. "The building provides additional services and better services than we have now. It's a secure facility, built to the current standards for those operations. It starts to create an identity for what Milton is and what it will become."

Pretty sure the building will be on Hwy 9, not Bethany Bend.

    How was this confused?
