FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Sheriff Duane K. Piper began his term swearing in his deputies and selecting a new command staff.

Piper held nine separate ceremonies. Piper had to swear in 275 Ga. POST certified personnel and 30 detention officers. He began the swearing in process on Monday evening, New Year's Eve, with personnel scheduled to work that evening and the following day, Jan. 2.

Unlike police officers, the sheriff's has to swear in the deputies for them to have their law enforcement powers.

"I was getting reacquainted with the deputies as I was swearing them in," Piper said. "The atmosphere was very enthusiastic. It's an honor to be their sheriff."

Michael A. Giordano was promoted from Lieutenant to Chief Deputy. He previously served as a Lieutenant in the Uniform Patrol Division and has been employed by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office since October 1997. He began his law enforcement career with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office as a detention officer and has worked his way up through the ranks.

Matthew S. Hester was promoted from a Deputy First Class to Lieutenant Colonel. He previously served as a Deputy First Class assigned to the Training Unit. He had also served as a Motor Officer in the Special Operations Division. He has been employed by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office since April 2007. Prior to coming to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office, he was employed by the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office from 1995 to 2007.

Paul Taylor and Dan Jagoe both served as Majors under Sheriff Ted Paxton and are remaining at this time in their current ranks and positions. Major Taylor joined the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office in May 2006. Major Jagoe joined the agency in May 2010. Both had previously worked for and retired from the DeKalb County Police Department.
