January 02, 2013 ROSWELL, Ga. — The Drake House received a $2,000 grant Dec. 13 from the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The grant will be used toward the Drake House Life Skills program for homeless mothers and their children.
The Drake House mission is to provide short-term crisis housing, assessment, support and empowerment to homeless mothers and their children in north metro Atlanta. Homeless families receive immediate housing and participate in a comprehensive life skills training program. The empowerment program includes weekly life skills workshops in which mothers are educated in areas such as health and wellness, job readiness, parenting and financial literacy.
"The Life Skills program is a key element in the Drake House's commitment to empower homeless mothers to hone their life skills and increase their incomes. UPS's partnership in accomplishing this objective will further our efforts to sustain and expand upon this vital component of our overall program," said Drake House Executive Director Kathy Swahn. "We are deeply grateful for the UPS Foundation's support."
Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, the UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In 2011, the UPS Foundation distributed more than $45.3 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Drake House and provide support for building stronger communities.
