JOHNS CREEK, Ga. Young artists from local elementary schools provided the art for Christmas and Hanukkah cards destined to brighten soldiers overseas during the holiday season. But they are much more than that.
The best of these cards display a wealth of talent, perception and a keen eye to express emotions with an image. Many of these cards could easily be sold with the logo of Hallmark on the back.
The 15 drawings were done by fifth-graders from Findley Oaks, Wilson Creek, Shakerag and State Bridge elementary schools in Johns Creek. The drawings have been combined into an 11-by-17-inch Holiday Card.
Four copies of the card one for each branch of the military were available for signing by the public from Nov. 26 to Dec. 7, and are being forwarded to particular units selected by Soldiers Angels, a nonprofit organization that supports military personnel.
A collage of the cards will be used as city of Johns Creek Christmas cards for use by the City Council.
"I love these cards every year. They are great and this year's is no exception," said Councilwoman Bev Miller. "I think this is a great partnership between the city and the schools. I think they are very well done."
The children's cards are one of Johns Creek's oldest traditions not that it has that many being incorporated only six years. But to see these cards and the talent behind them, it should be one tradition that stands the test of time.
