ROSWELL, Ga. – Roswell is an old town, and one of the oldest traditions is the annual holiday lighting of the town square.

This year, Dec. 1, residents sang holiday songs between sips of coffee and tastes of candy. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood read "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" to assembled children on the steps of the old bandstand, and school choirs and choruses from Esther Jackson, River Eves and Hillside elementary schools sang Christmas carols.

Brett Goodheart watched the square light up with his son Patrick.

"This is our first time out to the tree lighting and we are very excited," Goodheart said.

For the Jacob family, Lance, Sharon, 7-year-old Madison and 4-year-old Morgan, the square lighting was old hat.

"We come here every year, and this is our seventh year," said Sharon. "We love all the family-orientated activities."
