MILTON, Ga. – Milton has a history of being generous. For the Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser from the American Cancer Society, students of Milton High School came in first, raising $13,000 from students and staff members.

Milton senior Connor Doyle was named honorary chair of the school's Relay team, and he was honored Nov. 19 by the ACS and Principal Cliff Jones for the efforts he helped spearhead.

"If you ask people for money and tell them it's for a good cause, they'll give," Doyle said.

Doyle became involved with the American Cancer Society after his older sister, Courtney, also a student at MHS, died of a rare cancer. She was almost 18.

"A lot of teams had similar stories when they did it," Doyle said.

Since Courtney's death in 2008, the Doyle family members have been very active in Relay for Life. The first year they participated was the one year anniversary of Courtney's passing.

"Relay for Life is a wonderful event for everyone," said Pat Doyle, Connor's mother. "There are Milton High School staff, students and families that have been affected by this terrible disease. Raising money for a cure will give more people the opportunity to celebrate more birthdays with their loved ones."

Brenda Hamstead, the local representative of the American Cancer Society, presented Doyle with awards honoring him and the school for their fundraising efforts to find a cure for cancer.

"Cancer attacks a whole family in one way or another," Hamstead said. "I love what I'm doing because I'm surrounded by heroes."

Jones said he encourages the efforts of his school.

"Milton is a proud contributor [to Relay for Life]. It helps educate not just the high school but the community at large," he said. "Hope for a cure is just around the corner."
