CUMMING, Ga. — This holiday season, Cumming residents worked to brighten the lives of millions of needy children around the world.

From Nov. 12–19, North Lanier Baptist Church, 829 Atlanta Highway in Cumming, was bustling with activity as 15,800 shoeboxes packed full of goodies for needy kids overseas were dropped off by local individuals and families.

Volunteers such as Manya Adams prepared for the collection of 15,800 gift-filled shoeboxes — Cumming's target contribution to the world's largest Christmas project of its kind, Operation Christmas Child.

"It's very special to me," Adams said.

Gabe Walker, the Southeast regional manager and member of North Lanier Baptist Church currently assisting in collection efforts, said it's encouraging to hear the response, not only about the number of boxes, but how many people are helping, setting goals and then exceeding those goals.

"Most of these boxes will go to children who have never been given a gift before," Walker said.

Operation Christmas Child uses tracking technology to allow participants to "follow" their box to the destination country, where it will be given to a child in need.
