JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — In a fantasy world, this is how Diane Z. Shore would envision her publishing career taking off.

"I was washing the dishes one night, when the idea for a children's book popped into my head," she said. "I quickly wrote out the entire story and sent it off to my editor the next day.

"She called me later that week and told me she wanted to publish it. And that's how I became an award-winning author," Shore said.

Shore waved goodbye and headed toward the door of the Northeast/Spruill Oaks Library Nov. 3 during the "Getting Published: Patience, Persistence and Perseverance" writer's workshop.

The audience, ranging from elementary school students to grandmothers, laughed hysterically.

The reason it was funny was because everyone knew this success story was fiction.

Shore's true story went more along the lines of getting her first book published nearly 10 years ago and having the courage to withstand about 400 rejection letters.

Now, the marketing major has published eight books. She shared her experiences in an information-packed workshop on getting published. Among the topics covered in the workshop were starting small and thinking big, publishing versus writing and the importance of critique groups.
