CUMMING, Ga. — Greek culture and tradition is rich in music, food and faith.

This weekend, the festivities kick off Oct. 19 through Oct. 21 in Cumming when the Greek Festival holds its community celebration for the seventh time.

"We get this opportunity once a year to invite all of our neighbors in Forsyth County and in the northeast Georgia area to come and be a part of our community," said Rev. Barnabus Powell. "Our culture is made up, just like in the South, by food and fellowship and faith."

Participants will enjoy lively dances, food and shopping at the 15-acre Greek village at Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Church, 3074 Bethelview Road in Cumming. The event helps raise funds for the construction of a multi-purpose building.

The multi-purpose building will house a growing Sunday school and a temporary worship space because the chapel is now too small, Powell said.

"This is all helping us kick off our building program, because we are growing so much," Powell said.

New this year will be a cooking demonstration where Greek cuisine secrets are shared and even more dancers entertaining during the three-day event.

On the extensive menu, traditional food will include souvlaki, pastitsio, gyros, frappe, loukoumades and baklava.

There will also be shopping for authentic Greek sailor hats, clothing, coffee, spices, copper, ceramics, books, jewelry and other handcrafted items.

Children's fun play areas are also going to be set up.

Tours of the Greek Orthodox Christian Church take place throughout the day.

"One of the things we emphasize here at our festival is the Greek Orthodox faith, open to all," Powell said. "That's one of the things we focus on. It gives us the opportunity to open our doors and have everyone come eat dinner with us."
