ROSWELL, Ga. – It's not often an organization can celebrate its 160th anniversary. But that's what the Roswell Masonic Lodge No. 165 will do Oct. 27.

On that date in 1852, Roswell Lodge No. 165, a free and accepted lodge, was chartered under a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Georgia. Its chartering officers were H.W. Proudfoot, Elihu Hembree and John Dunwoody. For anyone living in Roswell, these names are quite familiar. As are the names Holcomb, Milton and Mansell. These prominent names grace the pages of the lodge rolls from the very beginning of the lodge. But it is not through association with prominent families that the brethren of Roswell Lodge No. 165 garner such respect. It is through their actions and the unselfish way in which each member serves the community that the brethren of the lodge have gained the respect and admiration of the community.

Throughout its long history, the Roswell Lodge has been an integral part of the Roswell community. Currently, the 150 members devote their time and energy to community and charitable causes, ranging from Canine Assistants to the Masonic Children's Home of Georgia and individual giving.

These men have continued to build upon the history of Roswell Lodge No. 165 by working hard to give back to the community. Through barbecues, fish fries, pancake breakfasts, Christmas tree sales and anonymous donations, they have raised money to aid those less fortunate members of Roswell. It is not out of pride or desire for recognition, but a deep desire to provide charity to those who cannot help themselves.

Charity is one of the most important tenets of Freemasonry. From an initiate's first introduction into the lodge, he is informed of his obligation to his fellow man. As with other lodges in Georgia, Roswell Lodge endeavors to give back to the community that it serves. Throughout its existence, Roswell Lodge has worked hard to help those needy citizens of Roswell, often without the recipient knowing where the helping hand came from. Masons in general are extremely proud of this fact, and the brothers of Roswell Lodge are no exception as they greatly enjoy giving charity without feeling the need to publish their deeds.

The brethren of Roswell Lodge No. 165 uphold their values of brotherly love, morality and charity, all of which are well within the halls of the lodge and the hearts of its members. As they strive to make good men better, they give unselfishly of themselves to aid those less fortunate and to improve the community in which they live.

Roswell Lodge No. 165 is located a block north of downtown Roswell at 1054 Ga. 9. They meet every first and third Thursday of each month.
