MILTON, Ga. — Last weekend's Crabapple Festival also had a pumpkin decorating contest.

Some 33 Crabapple Elementary students decorated the pumpkins that were placed throughout the area.

"We wanted the decorating to coincide with something in the school curriculum," said Kellee Avossa, of the Crabapple Community Association, the contest's organizer.

The pumpkins represent characters from students' favorite books.

"A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon and "Where the Wild Things Are" are two of the themed pumpkins.

The first place winners were in Tamy Brutlag's second-grade class for their "Days with Frog and Toad" pumpkins.

Second place was awarded to Kerri Manning's first-grade class for "Skipyjon Jones Class Action," and Kelly Miller's third-graders won third place for their "Big Bouffant" pumpkin.

The committee hopes to grow the contest for next year's festival.

Local businesses donated prizes for first, second and third place winners.

Scoops awarded an ice cream party for the first place winning class.

Vintage Pizzeria threw a party for second place, and Area 51 gave each student in the third place winning class a round of mini-golf and free popcorn, Avossa said. The committee was pleased with the response from students and teachers.

"We really wanted the kids to enjoy the decorating, and they did," said Amanda Quintana, CCA board member. "Every class participated and all of the pumpkins are amazing."
