October 03, 2012 MARIETTA, Ga. – Milton remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAAAAA, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter at Wheeler and rolling to a 34-13 victory last Friday night.
The Eagles (2-0, 4-1) did almost all their damage on the ground, with running backs Treyvon Paulk and Peyton Barber combining for 305 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
The Milton defense held Wheeler to a net 10 yards rushing, including 53 yards in losses, with the Wildcats successful on just two of 13 third down tries and one of four on fourth down.
After missing a field goal on their first series, the Eagles drove to a touchdown later in the opening period, scoring on Michael Schweinbeck's 17-yard run.
The Eagles capitalized on Wheeler mistakes to pad their lead. Chris Mills kicked a 38-yard field goal after a Milton fumble recovery, and Barber went 15 yards for a touchdown on the first play after a bad punt snap by the Wildcats.
Another Wheeler fumble in Wildcats' territory led to a 9-yard scoring run by Paulk to make it 24-0, with Wheeler driving to a pair of field goals later in the second period.
The Eagles put together a sustained drive on their first possession of the second half to make it 27-6 on a 34-yard field goal by Mills.
After the Wildcats (0-2, 2-3) scored their only touchdown on a 49-yard pass early in the final period, Milton put the game away on an 85-yard drive, capped by a 36-yard run by Barber.
Paulk finished with 177 yards on 22 carries and Barber gaining 128 yards on 17 attempts.
The Eagles play a key region game Thursday at Etowah, with the game televised live on WSB-TV's digital channel and re-broadcast at 1 a.m. Saturday on Channel 2. The two teams are in a four-way tie for first in the region at 2-0.
