Dutch Monkey Doughnuts' win means huge plus for local businesses


Customers could earn credit for shopping Cumming businesses

CUMMING, Ga. — They won.

And with the national exposure, Dutch Monkey Doughnuts have put Cumming, Ga. in the spotlight.

The independently owned shop, 3075 Ronald Reagan Boulevard, garnered about 58,000 votes to be one of five winners in the American Express Open's "Big Break for Small Business" contest.

Dutch Monkey Doughnuts owners Arpana Satyu and Martin Burge will get marketing and strategy sessions from American Express Open and Facebook, plus $25,000 cash to execute those strategies and drive customers to their door.

Training will include best practices using Facebook pages, ads and social plug-ins.

"The best part about winning this award is the meeting hosted by American Express and Facebook," Satyu said. "The meeting will teach us how to use social media sites for marketing. We are able to invite 10 small business friends to share the experience with us.

"Everything that we are gaining from winning this award is much bigger and meaningful to us than the money."

Martin, a graduate of New York's Culinary Institute of America met Satyu, a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in N.Y., while working at a New York fine dining restaurant.

They moved from New York to Cumming in 2007. When they grew tired of the work commute to Atlanta, they decided to use their culinary expertise to launch Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in October 2009.

To celebrate the winners, eligible American Express credit card members can get a "Big Break" too.

By registering beginning Sept. 17, when customers spend $20 or more on a single purchase at a qualifying small business in the winner's local community from Sept. 29 to Oct. 7, they will get a one-time $20 statement credit.

Other winners in the contest include, The Produce Box, of Raleigh, N.C.; Hendricks Boards, of Orange County, Calif.; Casale Jewelers, of Staten Island, N.Y. and Dick Pond Athletics, of Chicago, Ill.

    So they won this contest by garnering more votes through social media and part of their prize is how to better market through social media? Sounds like they already have the social media thing down better then anyone else in this contest.
