JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — School is back in session. The weather will soon be cooling off, and fall sports will soon be underway in Johns Creek.

To celebrate, Newtown Recreation and the city of Johns Creek are hosting the Fall Family Festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at Newtown Park's main soccer field.

"We put on a fun family day geared toward kids," said Kirk Franz, Johns Creek parks and recreation manager. "It's a great family activity where parents and kids have a great time."

The event will be held on the main soccer field and includes live music by Craig Gleason, animal demonstrations by Autrey Mill Nature Preserve staff, a karate demonstration and carnival games.

Contests include pie-eating and hula-hooping.

There will also be an obstacle course, moonwalks and a giant slide, as well as food, arts and crafts.

The event is free and open to the public.

During all the activities, youth soccer, lacrosse, flag football, T-ball and baseball teams will have their team and individual pictures taken.

The youth sports are for children ages 3 to 18.

Sept. 8 will be the last day of the farmers market for the season, and rather than having it in its regular location in the parking lot near Park Place and the community garden, it will also be on the soccer field with the rest of the activities.

"Folks can shop the farmers market and turn the kids loose on the activities," Franz said.

Several local businesses and organizations will also be present at the community event.

"It gives them exposure to families at the park," said Franz.

Youth sports teams began practicing Aug. 27, and the first games will be played the week of Sept. 15.
