JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The city of Johns Creek recognized 8-year-old Cooper Davis Aug. 27 for an act of bravery that made national headlines.

Davis was on vacation with his family in California last month when he rescued another boy from drowning in a hotel swimming pool.

Davis noticed the child floating face down underwater and dove in to pull the fellow 8-year-old from the bottom of the pool. He then brought him to the side where his father pulled him out of the water and began performing CPR.

Together, the two were able to save the child's life and Davis was acknowledged by the Garden Grove Police Department with a coin given to distinguished citizens.

Mayor Mike Bodker said he felt that training given through public safety teams in Johns Creek and other cities is vital for rescues like this one to be possible.

"I've got to believe that Cooper picked up that training along the way … and he was quick enough to use it on that day, and there's someone else still walking the earth as a result of that," Bodker said.

At the meeting on Tuesday, Davis was recognized as a hometown hero in Johns Creek and was given a standing ovation for his bravery.

At the same meeting, the council also recognized members of the Johns Creek Swim Team for their performance at the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association state meet in Carrollton last month.

"[These meetings give] us yet one other reminder of what a great community we have here in Johns Creek," Bodker said.

The team, which is referred to as the JCATS and consists of 81 swimmers between the ages of 7 and 18, earned 14 first-place medals in different categories.

Eight-year-old Carson Kennedy was even able to set a state record in the 7-8 boys' 100-yard Individual Medley preliminaries.

Many of the swimmers and their families attended the meeting and were granted medals for their efforts.
