August 20, 2012
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. On Saturday, Aug. 11, several football players and cheerleaders celebrated field safety at Sharon Springs Park.

It was a big day for Mothers 4 Concussion Awareness, which placed third in the STRIVE (Sports Teach Respect, Initiative, Values and Excellence) Youth Sports Organization of the Year competition.

This means they will be awarded $1,000.

"We are excited about winning third place in this national competition," said Jim Ellis, founder of Mothers 4 Concussion Awareness. "This is a great honor that we accept for the athletes, coaches, volunteers and the parents for their commitment to kids' safety and health."

Participants in the program gathered at the park off Sharon Road to shoot a video announcing their win and to run through some of their plays this season. Many players did not want to take chances and put on their Guardian helmet caps, which provide additional padding on their helmets.

The video shot at the park will be placed on the National Council of Youth Sports website, which sponsored the awards along with Chartis Insurance.

The award was given to organizations that embrace a "Kids First" approach, and implement best practices and policies to protect players and promote safety in youth sports.

Mothers 4 Concussion Awareness was nominated by the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Athletic Department.

Five finalists were selected by the National Council of Youth Sports, and Mothers 4 Concussion Awareness received the third highest online votes in a national voting campaign.

Their campaign demonstrated to young people that they can still have a great time on the field without compromising safety. Now, Ellis will use his award to reach out to Milton and Alpharetta youth programs.

"We are reaching out to our surrounding neighborhood parks and to other parks and recreation directors with our Play Book Guide on organizing, implementing or improving a concussion awareness, education, safety and baseline testing in youth sports and programs," Ellis said.

I see that a man began th eorganization. Why isn't he calling it "dads" against concussions? Seems that he is jumping on the bandwagon of making a buck with concussions.

Ms French,I invite you to view my web site and read our story. I would also be happy to talk to you about my organization. It was named after my mother "mary" who passed at 96 a few years ago. She worked a full time job, raised four kids, was our team mother, when my brother and I played football and my two sisters were cheer leaders. This was during 1950-59. Oh! she also washed the uniforms each week for players less fortunate that we were.
Re: earning a buck. any profit received by my organization is redistrubited back into the cause.
