August 19, 2012JOHNS CREEK, Ga. —At Park Place at Newtown School in Johns Creek, there is lots of laughter, learning and activities for adults over age 62.
On Saturday, Aug. 18, the facility celebrated its first anniversary as a center with a picnic.
The 1920s-era Newtown School was renovated to serve the older adults of Johns Creek and opened last year.
"We've grown to where we're offering quite a bit of stuff now," said Kirk Franz, recreation manager for the city of Johns Creek. "We're adding programs every two months."
Park Place offers fitness facilities, classes on computers, cooking, knitting and other activities such as Zumba fitness classes. In addition, social events like movies and day trips to nearby attractions are also offered.
The first year has been a busy one for staff and participants at Park Place.
Recently, the Park Place Activity Committee was formed to be the voice of the center between participants and staff.
In Park Place's second year, participants can look forward to more day trips. Currently, the Johns Creek Veterans Association is forming and they will be holding their meetings at Park Place.
"Fifty-five-year-olds have something to look forward to," Franz said. "All kinds of ages have recreational needs, so it's nice we can serve the recreational needs of our seniors."
Franz said he hopes the event will reach people who use the center and those who don't.
"I still think there's a lot of folks who don't know we're around," Franz said.
