JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Each year, the Johns Creek Arts Center partners with an established Atlanta institution during summer camp for cross-promotion and an opportunity for campers to make relevant and dramatic pieces of artwork for display at that institution.

This year, the arts center partnered with the Booth Western Art Museum to tie in with the 2012 summer camp theme "Amazing America," with sub-themes of Southwestern art (cowboys and Indians), the American craft movement (folk art), and American pop and modern art.

Groups of campers created collaborative art pieces to represent the different themes. Pieces include a mosaic American flag made by the mosaic campers; a Native American artist Dan Namingha-inspired landscape made by the teen visual arts campers; an "Eckman" paper sculpture-inspired "junk" bass relief cowboy boot; and a large Statue of Liberty painted by art campers in the style of Peter Max and Helen Frankenthaller. These pieces will go on display in the ballroom at the Booth Museum to coincide with their annual "Booth Birthday" event, which includes a variety of activities throughout the Booth Museum.

A fun family event, the Booth Birthday, Saturday, Aug. 25, will feature a variety of activities including a bean bag toss, snake in the bucket, film weaving and Lakota-Sioux charm bags.

Visitors may "picture themselves in a reproduction of a Western art masterpiece," as well as learn about the Booth's new Booth Emerging Artists Guild for ages 12-16.

There will also be a showing of the American experience film "Geronimo" in conjunction with Georgia Public Broadcasting and music by Phil Helton.

Magician David Ginn will tell the story of Lewis and Clark's adventure across America. All these activities are in addition to viewing the art of more than 200 artists in the Booth's collection. The Booth's extensive collection includes contemporary Western American art, a Civil War art gallery, more than 200 Native American artifacts, Sagebrush Ranch (a children's hands-on interactive gallery) as well as a Presidential gallery with an original signed letter from every United States president.
