August 07, 2012 FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Lambert High School Longhorn cross country team is holding their largest fundraiser of the season — a 5K and 1-mile fun run. This is the fourth time the annual community fundraiser will take place.
Both events take place Aug. 11, and money raised goes to fund activities for the 100 team members – boys and girls – in the school's 2012 cross country program.
"This is how we pay for our buses to travel on and our coaches," said Kimberly Martin, an organizer. "We have expenses. They have to stay in hotels, and we also use the money to buy new equipment."
Last year, a lackluster turnout raised $1,500, but the year before, with a nice showing, Martin said $3,000 was raised.
Martin said efforts have been amped up this year to get the best turnout possible.
Lambert will be one of the first high schools this fall to compete in the new Region 6-AAAAAA, which includes the top high schools in North Fulton and Forsyth counties, ensuring lively state competition.
The 5K race begins at 8 a.m., followed by a one-mile fun run and walk at 9:15 a.m. Late registration will be held at 7 a.m. through 7:45 a.m. on race day.
Runners will meet at the Lambert Longhorn High School stadium and wind through Lambert's campus over to Sharon Elementary School and back again, finishing with a sprint around the Lambert track.
