CUMMING, Ga. — If you’re a pork ribs, chicken or beef brisket barbecue fan — it’s time to cheer.
Ninety professional teams from 20 states and about 40 amateur teams will descend on the Cumming Fairgrounds to battle for the title of best barbecue during the National BBQ Cup Nov. 18 and 19.
“You should be starving when you come,” said Randall Bowman, the event’s organizer. “You’re going to be full by the time you leave — there’s going to be food of every kind.” The Kansas City Barbecue Society’s 160 judges will be in the city to taste all of the wonderful cooking. For an additional $5 on Saturday, participants can act as judges and taste barbecue from 40 participating tables competing for the people’s choice award.
“That’s a lot of food,” Bowman said.
The Que’n in Cumming battle will not only be about the contest — the “grand champion” takes home $4,000.
There will be concerts both days, a kids’ zone with bounce houses and other activities, along with vendors selling all kinds of food.
Bowman, who owns Deep South BBQ, will not be competing because he’s an organizer. He’s not upset because he has competed for about the past six years.
“We’re a big part of it, we’re just not in the competition,” he said.
The food event is interactive with some of the competitors also selling their food and an additional 20 vendors serving pizza, brownies, funnel cakes and hamburgers.
Proceeds will go to the local nonprofits Bald Ridge Lodge, Jesse’s House and Forsyth Community Connection.
“It’s a great way for the community to come together and forget about their disagreements on SPLOST or water contracts,” Bowman said. “I don’t know how anybody could not be happy.”
