When someone is finally pulled over for driving under the influence, yes, finally — there are a few things to remember.

You got caught and you feel pretty awful about what you did. But don't blame it on the alcohol, blame it on the lack of planning before heading out of that bar or party.

And now, here's a dose of reality. It will cost you.

How much? Well, it's about $1,500 in fines and court fees and that's not counting your attorney's fees.

But wait, there's more. It will cost about $40 per month — $480 for the year — to pay for court-mandated monitoring.

So when public safety announcements, the DUI pages of newspapers and the tales of buddies getting busted for DUI don't work, maybe a monetary check will sober you up.

And that's just half of it. About 10,000 people are killed each year — 300 in Georgia — related to drunk driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

And the .08 limit is now carrying over from the roadways to the waterways.

The new boating under the influence limits were reduced this year from .10 to .08 as well as the age requirement for life-jacket from age 10 to 13.

So before getting in the car or boat and even walking drunk, think about the cost.
