May 29, 2013Two new local 5K races are well on track for successful first runs.
The first race – "Tusk Run 5K" is a USATF-certified Peachtree qualifier and is being held Saturday, June 8 on a course in downtown Alpharetta located near Wills Park. Included in the run are a few interesting twists including a "Caveman Costume" contest with $100 gift cards for best male and female costumes. The run, which is being created and directed by Jimmy Tester, owner of two area car washes (Mammoth Car Wash), also is spicing things up by adding a bright yellow Lamborghini Superveloce pace car. Tester is reportedly not offering it as the grand prize. But he is super involved in the community and worthy of all our support even if he isn't giving up the car.
Handcrafted, custom awards will be given to first, second and third place male and female racers in each age category. First place male and female overall will win a $300 gift card each to Mammoth Detail Salons. An awards ceremony will be held announcing the winners of a caveman/cavewoman best dressed contest, with a $100 Mammoth gift card for each as well. All runners get an awesome T-shirt.
The run is benefiting HDSA (Huntington's Disease Society of America). All proceeds support HDSA's fight to improve the lives of people affected by Huntingdon's Disease and their families.

Results will be provided by Zulu Racing using electronic timing technology. This race is chip timed and will be held rain or shine.
The second 5K, called "MedAssets Hire Heroes USA 5K Race for Heroes," is being sponsored by MedAssets of Alpharetta and is scheduled to take place near North Point Mall on Saturday, June 15 at 7 a.m. The goal of the race is to raise $50,000. According to MedAssets Senior Communications Operations Manager Maureen Cole, almost $30,000 has been raised and approximately 200 runners have already signed up for the event.
This race is particularly interesting because of the organization that it is supporting – Hire Heroes USA – which was started in 2005 by John Bartis, CEO of MedAssets. The mission, according to Brian Stann, CEO of Hire Heroes USA, is to help unemployed veterans transition from the military to civilian life. The organization assists the veterans with everything from writing resumes to helping them learn how to network and self-market themselves. The program is active nationally and includes a substantial presence on military bases all around the country.
The race begins at the MedAssets office next to North Point Mall and follows a circular route around North Point Parkway, Haynes Bridge Road and Mansell Road before finishing back at the MedAssets office.
All runners will receive a technical T-shirt (depending on availability) and a commemorative HHUSA dog tag at the end of the race. To register and for more information, go to www.medassetsraceforheroes.com.
