Another Successful Year for the Chipper

January 21, 2013
January 5, 2013 dawned cold and gray. It was a perfect day to watch a movie, sit in front of a roaring fire, or take down the holiday decorations. The weather did not discourage the more than three hundred hardy souls who loaded their Christmas trees into and onto their cars eager to recycle them into mulch. It wasn't too cold for the dedicated volunteers from the Young Men's Service League, the Alpharetta-Johns Creek Kiwanis Club, and for several of our own commissioners, who came out to help with the tree recycling.

At last year's "Bring One for the Chipper Event", Davey Tree Company helped to recycle over 2,000 Christmas trees at our Windward Parkway Home Depot location by chipping them into free mulch. While the final tally is still underway, we expect that at least that many trees, if not more, were successfully recycled at this year's event. Instead of crowding our landfills, these trees are now being re-used as beneficial (and fragrant) ground cover mulch.

We'd like to say a big "thank you" to the many "Chipper" volunteers who braved the cold to help unload retired Christmas trees, and who helped to distribute free red bud saplings donated by the Alpharetta Rotary, free vegetable seeds donated by Ferry-Morse, and free Chick-Fil-A coupons to everyone who came out. We'd also like to thank Home Depot, Davey Tree Company, and all of you for being part of one of our most popular annual recycling events! We hope you enjoy the photos of our Chipper event!
