Mustaches, novels and turkeys, oh my!

November 12, 2012
November is a fun time of year, filled not just with ever-chilling weather and plenty of events. There's Thanksgiving and the start of that countdown toward Christmas and the New Year. Here are two that caught my eye.

November is the time many men around the country decide to grow out their facial hair (just the mustache) for mustache November, or "Movember." The idea is to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate and testicular cancer. They do this by growing a mustache.

In 2011, over 854,000 "Mo Bros" around the world got on board, raising $126.3 million toward research in the cancers.

I thought this was a good, noble (and manly) cause and decided to commit to it. I informed my girlfriend who immediately squashed the idea, informing my broken heart that I would look horrible in a mustache and forbidding me to stop shaving.

For those men who wish to take part, the website is www.movember.com. Be sure to get your significant other's permission before signing up.

November is also NaNoWriMo. For the uninitiated, that mouthful stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's a month designed to get that inner novel out of even the busiest of people. By setting a firm deadline – start Nov. 1 and end Nov. 30 – it gives budding authors the drive to finish a 50,000 word first draft.

Sometimes that's all you need, but because it's an international event, writers can help each other out, compel each other to struggle through each chapter and keep each other honest in their progress.

Several people in the newsroom are taking part, and it's proving just as hard as it ever is, but the group-help is a definite plus.

Writing can suck all the free time from your life, so be prepared to sacrifice sunlight and socializing for the rest of the month.

NaNoWriMo can be found online at www.nanowrimo.org.

So if you're out and about in North Fulton, I can probably be found in a Starbucks or similar place, tapping away on a laptop and twirling my imaginary mustache. Come join me.
