Did you know 92 percent of people are employed?
When you put it like that, it doesn't sound like a bad number. A 92 percent on any test is still an A.
Instead, we focus on trying to find the one rotten egg out of a dozen. What we need is to worry about the people who have a job and how they can keep that job.
The economy is growing modestly and job creation has slowed sharply in the past three months.
U.S. employers added about 75,000 jobs in that time, down from a pace of 226,000 in the first three months of the year.
Sure things could be better. We could have a 96 percent employment rate like was the case in 2000 and most years since 1948. But then it could also be worst, like a 90 percent employment in the early and mid-80s.
I know it's not easy being unemployed or under employed. It's also a full time job, just trying to get hired somewhere. But being discouraged by the 8 percent unemployment rate is not going to make things better.
My advice is work somewhere, anywhere, even if it's below your education level or your skill level. And continue to seek out your perfect gig. The old saying is that it's easier to get a job when you already have one.
To employers, I say, thank you.
In addition, make room in your company for one more slot and together we can turn that A into an A-plus.
Things will certainly pick up as long as we don't give up and get sucked into spending afternoons with Maury and Jerry Springer.
