July 11, 2012 Before I was a naturalized U.S. citizen, I couldn't vote.
I could legally work, but I could not vote. That all changed in 2000, and I have not looked back or missed an opportunity to cast my ballot.
This July 31 or even sooner, I'll exercise my right as an American and I'll vote. So should you.
I recently learned that about 62 percent of Forsyth County's residents are registered to vote in the July 31 election.
In a county where the latest population counts put us at about 180,000, having some 100,000 active voters eligible in the upcoming election is nothing short of powerful.
Not only will three county commissioner's seats be up for a vote, but the sheriff, coroner and a dozen other public offices will be decided by you and me. A vote on the regional transportation referendum that could potentially raise some $400 million for road construction in the county is also on the ballot.
Many people ignore mid-year elections and opt for the big one — the presidential elections in November — but as the common phrase goes, "All politics is local."
Forsyth County residents who have already made up their minds can begin to cast their vote as advance voting for the July 31 general primary and non partisan/special election began Monday, July 9, and will run through Friday, July 27.
Forsyth County registered voters may cast their ballot during early voting at the Forsyth County Administration Building, 110 East Main Street in Cumming.
