ATLANTA – Commuters heading downtown will see their travel get worse before it gets much, much better. Improvements to the interchange of Ga. 400 and I-285 are closer to happening thanks to a $10.5 million commitment from the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts (CID), which covers many of the northern suburbs south of the Chattahoochee River.

"Improvements to the I-285 and Ga. 400 Interchange are the No. 1 priority for the Perimeter CIDs," said Yvonne Williams, president and CEO of Perimeter CID.

Perimeter CIDs officials announced that the boards have approved the issuance of a $10 million bond for measurable project milestones. They also approved $500,000 to provide partnership building, research and support for the first phases of the interchange project.

Central Perimeter is at the center of regional growth in Metro Atlanta and one of the largest employment centers in the Southeast – larger than the downtowns of Charlotte, Nashville and Jacksonville. Of the more than 123,000 jobs in the area, nearly 90 percent are filled by commuters.

GDOT is working on plans for the intersection and expects federal approval of the project in 2015.

The Perimeter CIDs is a group comprised of the cities and commercial groups – including other CIDs – along the northern edge of Atlanta.

The move by the Perimeter CIDs highlights the muscle local CIDs have with helping public infrastructure projects.

The North Fulton CID encompasses businesses in Roswell, Alpharetta and Milton and had been instrumental in developing North Fulton in the past decade.

Over the past nine years, North Fulton's CID has committed $16 million for an estimated $81 million for community improvement projects. $9 million in CID investment has yielded more than $43 million in area improvements.

Their projects include $789,000 to purchase right-of-way to complete the final leg of Westside Parkway in 2012. About $4 million is invested in improving the Encore Parkway bridge over Ga. 400.

It will be expanded to include pedestrian and bicycle access, a planted median and landscaping. Another $500,000 is slated to engineer an extension of Northwinds Parkway, connecting it to Old Milton Parkway to relive the planned traffic that will come from the new Gwinnett Tech campus.

The CID also landscaped the intersections of Roswell and Alpharetta at Ga. 400.
