Alpharetta new business licenses slow

Home-based numbers drop, offices steady

March 27, 2013
ALPHARETTA, Ga. New applications for business licenses in Alpharetta seem to be slowing down, according to numbers provided by the city.

Since 2010, overall new applications have dropped slowly but steadily. In 2010, there were a total of 778 new licenses issued. In 2011, that number fell slightly to 690. The next year, 2012, it was 602. These numbers can be divided up into types of licenses issued, which give a clearer picture of what is causing the drop off. During those three years, 2010-2012 new office-based businesses remained roughly steady. There were 447 in 2010, 465 in 2011 and 426 in 2012. The numbers indicate more than 1,300 new office-based businesses opened their doors in those three years.

New home-based business licenses dropped continually during those years. In 2010, the number of new licenses was 182. The next years were 178 and 134.

Alpharetta Code Enforcement Officer William Blood said the decline in home-based businesses comes as the economy improves.

"The years 2009 and 2010 were big because everybody lost their jobs and tried to do things from home," Blood said.

As the economy improves, Blood said workers are leaving home and going back to the offices as they get new jobs.

Insurance companies getting new business licenses also dropped significantly. This number includes not only those locating in Alpharetta, but those obtaining state licenses.

Blood said the numbers should be fine for 2013.

Year-to-date in 2013, there are 168 new licenses issued, with nearly 100 of those coming from office-based businesses.

"I think it's going to be OK," he said. "We'll have a picture at end of March [the end of the first quarter]. I think there is a lot of stuff opening. With Avalon and the [Gwinnett] college and other new businesses coming on Haynes Bridge Road, I think this year will be a pretty good year."
