ALPHARETTA, Ga. In recent years, North Fulton, and Alpharetta in particular, seems to be taking on a new role as the destination of choice for retirement and senior living projects, with three such projects underway right now.

Benton House, an Alpharetta-based senior living group, already has a footprint in Johns Creek, but is expanding with a new single-level, 47-apartment-complex at the corner of Ga. 9 and Cogburn Road, just south of Windward Parkway.

"This is our newest addition, and we're excited to be here," said Jessica Carroll-Miller, social media director with Benton House. "It's a great area."

Many older couples are choosing to move from out of state to be closer to their children or grandchildren, Carroll-Miller said. If they do not have full mobility, assisted living homes are a good option.

Nearly next door just down the road a 118-bed retirement community is to be on Vaughn Drive, between Ga. 9 and Hopewell Road, just south of Milton. Called the "Cottonwood Estates," the project is a three-story senior assisted living facility sitting on just shy of four acres. It is being developed by Lenity Group of Salem, Ore., which specializes in building such projects throughout the United States and England.

In neighboring Forsyth County, the $15 million, 12-acre Villas at Canterfield is being constructed at 815 Atlanta Highway in Cumming.

The three-neighborhood community will include villa-style housing, independent living apartments and in the near future, they will have assisted living.

Once fully completed, the project cost is estimated about $30 million.

Medical Development Corp., which has been around since 1989, is the developer of the project. They expect the project to be completed by early September.

"We're in the middle of getting our certificate of occupancy," said Win Porter, president.

Other locations are also in the works throughout the Southeast.
