Johns Creek to host Medal of Honor recipient May 12

Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston, USMC (Ret.) to visit Park Place

May 10, 2012
JOHNS CREEK, Ga.--Park Place, Johns Creek's Active Adult Center, will host retired Maj. General James E. Livingston, who won a Congressional Medal of Honor and wrote "Noble Warrior," an eyewitness account of the Vietnam War.

"We've wanted to get General Livingston to Park Place ever since we opened last year," said City Manager John Kachmar. "He's a true American hero and a wonderful speaker who inspires people of all ages wherever he speaks around the country."

It was 44 years ago next month that Livingston, as a Marine captain, led his company to help fellow Marines isolated at the heavily fortified village of Dai Do. Despite being critically wounded three times, and not able to walk near the end, Livingston fearlessly commanded his men against enemy forces, risking his life time and again during the three-day battle in one of the most prolonged and costliest campaigns of the war.

For his heroic actions at Dai Do, Livingston was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1970 by President Richard M. Nixon. He served on active duty in the Marine Corps over 33 years before retiring in 1995.

A native of Towns, Ga.,Livingston is one of only 81 living recipients of the medal, the United States' highest military decoration.

The public is invited to the free event, which will be followed by a book-signing of "Noble Warrior," Livingston's eyewitness account.

Park Place is located at 3125 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022. For more information, call the city's Recreation and Parks Department at 678-512-3200.
