MILTON - Birmingham United Methodist Church (BUMC) had an old-fashioned bell raising Nov. 14 - with a few modern touches, of course.
It took a tractor and a team of dedicated men and women to get the 294-pound bell, originally cast in 1892 by C.S. Bell and Co. in Hillsboro, Ohio, up the tower that overlooks BUMC’s campus. But there were more than enough folks to help, as parishioners came out on a beautiful Saturday morning to see their bell rung for the first time since May 2009, when it was taken down for refurbishing.
The bell will have its official rededication after the church service Nov. 29 - the first day of Advent, said Dr. Dave Benson, senior pastor of the church.
“It is going to be significant to have this bell,” he said.
The bell has been known for years in the area as a tradition that lets people know when “it’s time to go to church,” said Benson.
“This is going to be rich for us,” he said.
