Forsyth County celebrated the opening of its third recycling center Oct. 30 with a ribbon cutting and small ceremony.

County Commission Chair Charles Laughinghouse said centers like this are crucial for the future.

"It is important to protect the environment for future generations," he said. "We will continue to fulfill the Forsyth County waste management plan."

Laughinghouse said citizens are seeing the importance of recycling.

"The citizens continue to understand the need for recycling and what it does for the county," he said.

Forsyth County held Nov. 17 what Laughinghouse called a "very important event" to recycle electronic equipment in the number three parking lot at the Cumming Fairgrounds.

"In the past, we have recycled thousands of pounds of electronic equipment,' he said. "I look forward to the continued recycling efforts in this county."

Environmental Program Manager Tammy Wright said it was a "family" of people devoted to recycling that made the center possible.

"Forsyth County has accepted the challenge of spreading the recycling message," she said, "and that is litter on the ground is bad, placing it in the trash is better, but recycling is best."

The center was made possible primarily through grant funds.

Wright said the county is making great strides in spreading the recycling message.

"We're on the right path," she said, "but there is still room for improvement."

Residents can recycle paper, metal, plastics, glass and other miscellaneous items such as motor oil, alkaline batteries and toner cartridges.

The Forsyth County Recycling Centers offer tips on recycling including removing all plastic, glass and metal containers, removing lids from bottles, flattening recyclable items (cardboard, cans and plastics) and removing newspapers from sacks or bundles before placing in bins.

Forsyth County Recycling Centers are only open to county residents.
