November 20, 2007 Some Forsyth County residents will have a very busy holiday season.
Forsyth County Commissioners decided Nov. 13 to create a committee charged with the task of creating a project list for special purpose local option sales tax to present to voters.
The voters will decide on the SPLOST in February in conjunction with the presidential primaries.
Representatives from Nashill, Inc. recommended to commissioners a diverse committee is the best way to tap into the desires of the community.
Each commissioner will choose a member of the seven-member committee. The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce will probably choose one committee member and the other will be chosen to represent the senior population.
Commissioner Linda Ledbetter said she was glad the board would not be choosing the entire committee.
"I don't think we should appoint all seven," she said. "We need to get people that are really excited about this."
But time is of the essence. The committee will need to meet and decide on SPLOST priorities as soon as possible.
Commissioner David Richard said these committee members should be named "immediately."
"We have got to have a final list by the time of the election," he said. "They will have to have the willingness to spend a lot of time working on this in a short amount of time. And it will be during the holidays."
Ledbetter agreed.
"We've pushed this so far back that we need to do this soon," she said. "These folks won't have a lot of time."
