Most of us like to feel connected to society in some way, but it's not always easy if you don't have an understanding of the culture or language.

That is changing for many Hispanics thanks to Cumming First United Methodist Church and the Mexican Institute in the Mexican Consulate.

On Oct. 23, an official agreement was signed by Alberto Diaz, Coordinator of the Mexican Institute and Reverend John Cromartie, allowing for an educational program at Cumming First United Methodist Church.

The program costs nothing, and will open doors for many Hispanics seeking everything from English language skills to financial education. Nursery care for children is provided during classes.

The Plaza Comunitaria program was authorized after Reverend Eduardo Stevens wrote and submitted a grant to begin the program at the church.

"The grant took about four months to write and we are excited at the prospect that people can now finish their education knowing they are in control of the entire process. We can help people set and reach goals though this program, " said Stevens who submitted the grant to authorities last December.

The program will provide on site instruction and accessibility to web sites through every step of the education process.

"We've been looking forward to building this bridge between our cultures through a shared value of education. I feel that we represent all churches in this endeavor and we hope to expand into other areas throughout the community and nation," said Reverend John Cromartie.

Cumming First United Methodist Church has also partnered with Lanier Technical College to offer eight different English courses hosted by the church twice a week.

Norma Malone, the teacher on assignment at the Hill Center for non-English speaking students and their parents explained the program and encouraged parents to make education a family affair.

"This is an opportunity for us to become a role model for our children in a place where we can all learn regardless of our religion or where we come from," said Malone who thanked Eduardo Stevens for his successful efforts in writing the grant that made it all possible.

As the Plaza Comunitaria Program expands, additional classes will be incorporated to accommodate advanced education for students.

"This program provides concrete results and diplomas with the potential to expand into other areas of advanced education," explained Alberto Diaz who anticipates specialized classes to be added to the program in the near future.

Those interested can contact First Cumming United Methodist Church at 770-887-2900 ext. 216 or Reverend Eduardo Stevens at 678-654-7147.
