1940: Congress passes the Selective Service Act, which calls for the first peacetime draft in U.S. history.
1942: The Japanese base at Kiska in the Aleutian Islands is raided by American bombers.Led by legendary flier Jimmy Doolittle, 16 U.S. Army B-25 bombers broke through Japanese defenses on April 18, 1942, to strike Tokyo and other cities in broad daylight.
1945: Japan surrenders Hong Kong to Britain.RAF officer Aidan MacCarthy narrowly escaped the Nazis, spent three years in Japanese POW camps and survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
1950: The U.S. 8th Army breaks out of the Pusan Perimeter in South Korea and begins heading north to meet MacArthur's troops heading south from Inchon.A year after leaving West Point, Lt. Joe Kingston was en route to Korea, where he, like a lot of others, found himself retreating and advancing in a single day.
1972: South Vietnamese troops recapture Quang Tri province in South Vietnam from the North Vietnamese Army. Lessons learned in the savage 1972 Eastertide Offensive paid off at the Battle of Khafji almost two decades later.
